State Secretary Dr Meike Niedbal inaugurates Qwello’s first Public Charging Station in Berlin

After a pleasantly short planning and approval process, in close coordination with the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer Protection, and Climate Action, the first Qwello charging stations on Cecilienstraße in the Berlin district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf have now been completed and will soon be operational.

To celebrate this occasion, Qwello held an opening ceremony where, in the presence of Dr. Meike Niedbal, State Secretary of the Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer Protection, and Climate Action, as well as Rossen Todorov and Norman Döge from the same department, the charging stations were officially put into operation for the first time.

Qwello is actively participating as a third-party provider in the further expansion of public charging infrastructure in Berlin’s streets.

The German government has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. To achieve these targets, road transport must be rapidly “electrified,” which requires a widespread, user-friendly, and demand-oriented charging infrastructure.

The growing popularity of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids is also reflected in the registration numbers of electric cars in Germany. From January to March 2023, 94,736 electric vehicles were registered in Germany. In the previous year, 2022 saw a record number of new electric vehicle registrations, with approximately 470,559 new electric cars—the highest number ever recorded.

With the steadily increasing share of electric vehicles, the demand for public charging infrastructure continues to grow. Qwello is excited to contribute to the expansion of public charging infrastructure in Berlin, following successful infrastructure projects in other major German and European cities.
